The Master of Arts in Social Policy (by research) is a programme which will provide interested applicants with a more flexible way of furthering your studies. It will provide a core taught study-unit which will provide you with postgraduate research knowledge and skills to enable you to produce a robust research study on their chosen topic, under the guidance of a supervisor with relevant expertise.

* Work on the dissertation is expected to start in Semester 1 of academic year 2024-25 and continue up to the end of Semester 2 of academic year 2026-27.
 

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Degree of Master of Arts - M.A. - under the auspices of the Faculty for Social Wellbeing.

By the end of the programme, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of systematic inquiry, and of the role of social policy research and its relationship to evidence-based practice.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of research philosophies as well as competence in the development of research strategy, design and methods.
  • Demonstrate capacity for empirical inquiry and critical thinking, and a commitment to your use for service and organisational improvement.
  • Critically evaluate and synthesise existing social policy literature and evaluate its relevance for theoretical and practical problem solving.
  • Debate social issues, drawing on the literature as well as your research and work experience.

Knowledge and understanding

By the end of the programme, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of systematic inquiry, and of the role of social policy research and its relationship to evidence-based practice;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of research philosophies as well as competence in the development of research strategy, design and methods;
  • Demonstrate awareness of and commitment to ethics in social research, and the ability to design and implement research that fully respects these ethics;
  • Identify and critically analyse the use and quality of research in social policy and administration, including the organisational contexts within which students work;
  • Demonstrate an awareness of minority, disability, and gender issues, particularly in research, and an understanding of how to develop user involvement research practices.

Skills

By the end of the programme, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate capacity for empirical inquiry and critical thinking, and a commitment to your use for service and organizational improvement;
  • Critically evaluate and synthesise existing social policy literature and evaluate its relevance for theoretical and practical problem solving;
  • Source relevant statistical data in social policy and particularly in the area of relevance to you;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of different research philosophies, designs and methods, and competence in those areas relevant to your chosen question;
  • Operationalise social problems and meaningfully connect the theoretical and empirical dimensionsof research;
  • Engage with service users when undertaking research;
  • Debate social issues, drawing on the literature as well as your research and work experience;
  • Communicate research outputs to a wide audience, including scientific journals, policy makers and colleagues;
  • Start and successfully complete a research study and to write up the findings in line with the University's guidelines.

This degree assists you to further your career in research or administration in the public sector and NGOs, as well as private companies and consultancies. The successful completion of a research degree signals to an employer that you are a methodical, creative and diligent, capable of both working independently and collaborating with supervisors, and have proven abilities in problem solving, data analysis and report writing.

This degree also provides the opportunity for students to explore the option to pursue their studies at doctoral level. The initiative, focus and research competence developed during this programme would serve as an excellent basis for research at higher levels.
